What is Otulanie?

The traditions of restoring women after childbirth have existed for centuries in all cultures. Otulanie is a Slavic therapeutic ritual helping your body to close after pregnancy and birth. Otulanie means literally to swaddle with love and kindness. During Otulanie your body is warmed from inside and outside, an aromatherapeutic massage takes place and you are swaddled in cloths at the end.

Who can benefit from Otulanie?

  • you would like to have a closure of the past experiences and prepare for the upcoming new chapter of your life

  • you are just after childbirth or you have experienced a loss like misscarriage or stillbirth

  • your birth has been a long time ago, but inside you still feel dissatisfied and hurt after the experience

  • you feel fatigue, and your back, joints and the whole body hurts

  • you have no time for anything except feeding and changing your baby, you have no strength to take care of yourself

  • you do not want to do anything and even your own child can make you very nervous

  • the pain can be both physical or spiritual

How does Otulanie look like?

  1. Otulanie starts with creating a safe and warm atmosphere, getting to know each other during a compassionate conversation, identifying needs or voicing concerns and setting boundaries. There are also some medical questions to be answered before the meeting via phone or email.

  2. The next step is to prepare a special herbal beverage that is hot and quite spicy, as its most important task is to warm up the body. Warming up will take place over the next few hours, so together we decide on its favorite
ingredients so that the prepared drink tastes good to the person receiving Otulanie.

  3. After your body is warmed up from the spice drink, a warm bath infused with herbs is prepared. A bath will take around 20-30 minutes. This bath is to warm up the body from the outside. In addition, we have here the relaxing, antibacterial
and regenerative effect of the herbs, which together with the hot drink warms up the whole body, causing active sweating and muscle relaxation. This makes the body flexible, more susceptible to every influence. If the birth was recent, then along with the sweat relaxin hormones are released, which soften the joints, making them very mobile. All this helps to "gather" the body back into shape, to define its new limits.

  4. While being in the bathtub a gentle womb massage is performed.

  5. The bathroom, as a neutral room, is also a place of transition. I set an intimate atmosphere to invite a flow of love hormone - oxytocin. This safe space is a moment to process the past, tell the birth story whether about pain, victory, happiness or sadness. It's a moment to release the tears and tension.

  6. Massage. Helps reduce and even eliminate pain in joints and muscles. By relaxing the muscles, I allow blood and lymph to flow freely in the body, allowing toxins and unnecessary fluids to be released and discarded. Bodywork is very gentle and soft. I am listening to the needs of the body. This includes a therapeutic abdominal massage and gentle guidance of the organs to their proper places.

  7. Oil massage with natural essential oils. After a warm bath, the body is kept warm and the woman is swaddled in cloths, just as you swaddle a newborn baby. One by one, uncovering parts of the body, the massage is performed with heated oil and aromatic oils, the mixture of which is chosen at the very beginning of the meeting and selected according to the situation. At this stage it starts to feel blissful and sleepy, this is how the gentle oil massage works. The muscles continue to warm up, while the aroma performs its gentle therapeutic action (I remind,
that the woman herself chooses exactly what).

  8. Otulanie (swaddling) is the final moment of the procedure.
Using traditional Polish cloths and natural cotton materials groups of muscles and bones are pressured together, defining a new body form. As a result of such compression:

  • metabolism and blood production are accelerated

  • deep regeneration processes are activated

  • body functions are normalized

  • dynamic serotypes are changed

  • the circumference of the waist, ribs and pelvis is reduced

  • emotional blockades in the body are released.

Completion of the procedure is primarily about suggestions and advice on postpartum adaptation and self-care for the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Otulanie takes place?

Traditionally, postpartum swaddling takes place in your home, in a peaceful atmosphere, in harmony with everything going on in the family.

When it is best to perform Otulanie?

The greatest physiological effect of postpartum swaddling can be achieved in the first 40 days after birth. However, even during the first 3 to 6 months after delivery, the effect will be felt. This is due to the high concentration of the hormone relaxin in the blood and by the body's natural flexibility during this period.

How long does Otulanie take?

The whole ceremony takes about 3-5 hours.
Time flies very quickly during swaddling and passes unnoticed. It is best to create conditions so that time in no way limits the performance of the procedure in full. Everything is to be adapted to individual needs.

Can I benefit from Otulanie if my birth was years ago?

The answer is YES, of course!
Postpartum swaddling can be done to a person who has not yet had children, or one who is having trouble getting pregnant or feels that she needs to close a stage in her life, to move on. Wrapping is even beneficial for grandmothers and can then be treated as a beneficial, strengthening procedure.

How do you justify the price for Otulanie?

Otulanie is an exclusive, authentic postpartum rehabilitation procedure. It is a unique gift, individually tailored for the individual woman each time.

Working with a woman during this period requires certain knowledge and skills. It is performed during one of the most important moments of a woman's life strongly related to her health and body.

The wrapping procedure may take 4 to 6 hours and is performed by people who are experienced in caring for women.
High-quality materials are used during the procedure.

When Otulanie cannot be performed?

Wrapping is an individual procedure and is arranged solely on the basis of the needs and individual situations of a given client.

Main contraindications: cancer, heart disease, claustrophobia, pregnancy.

Where is the newborn baby during the ceremony?

At each stage of Otulanie there is a possibility to take a break for feeding and cuddling the baby. It is important that for the time of wrapping there is one more person at home, who will take care of the baby or the older child and take it for a walk for example. This may be the husband, mother, sister, friend.
If this is not possible, it is advisable to use a nanny, who will take care of the siblings at home.

Is a herbal bath safe during postpartum period?

Yes, the herbal bath is safe during postpartum as long as it's performed after 10th day. The uterus shrinks then physiologically after birth, and the internal uterine outlet usually closes around the 10th day.

How should I prepare for Otulanie?

First, arrange the whole day just for yourself. Allow yourself to be undisturbed. Send older children out for a trip with papa or friend, do not plan any housework, or running errands after the swaddling.

It is recommended to stay in bed until the next morning - you might want to communicate that to your loved ones in advance.

Before the ceremony, please wash the bathtub with baking soda and water.

Please prepare:

  • 5 cotton bedsheets that we will be swaddling you in

  • a mussling diaper for the herbs

  • socks and a hat

  • clean towels in the bathroom

  • three pots, such as 5, 3, and 1.5l.
